MTD for Income Tax explained

Making Tax Digital for Income Tax means quarterly updates for many self-employed people and landlords. How it differs from year-end Self Assessment.

In short

Making Tax Digital for Income Tax (MTD for ITSA) is HMRC’s digital regime for many self-employed people and landlords. It adds quarterly updates during the year. The annual Self Assessment (SA100) still closes the year. Self Assessment Software today is year-end SA production — quarterly MTD updates are planned as a later add-on, not in the current filing price.

MTD quarterly vs year-end SA100

They work together — they are not the same filing.

Quarterly updates

Digital summaries of income and expenses sent during the year for people in MTD scope.

Year-end Self Assessment

The SA100 (and related pages) still finalises the year, claims, and balancing tax.

Who is in scope

HMRC is phasing in self-employed people and landlords above income thresholds. Dates and thresholds change — check GOV.UK for your year.

Software requirement

MTD updates must come from compatible software, not typed into a paper-style form on GOV.UK.

FAQs

MTD — questions answered

What is Making Tax Digital for Income Tax?

MTD for Income Tax (ITSA) is HMRC’s regime that requires many self-employed people and landlords to send quarterly digital updates using compatible software, while still completing a year-end Self Assessment.

Does MTD replace the SA100?

No. Quarterly updates run during the year. The SA100 (and related pages) still closes the year and deals with the full Self Assessment position.

Does Self Assessment Software support MTD quarterly updates?

Not in the current public price. Year-end Self Assessment is included now. Quarterly MTD updates are planned as a later add-on.

What should I use for quarterly updates today?

Use MTD-compatible bookkeeping or a dedicated quarterly filing product for updates. Use Self Assessment Software for year-end SA100 depth, calculation and filing.

Where do I check if I am in MTD scope?

On GOV.UK. Thresholds and start dates are set by HMRC and can change by tax year — do not rely on a vendor blog alone.
