In short

FAQ

Product & scope

What the desk is — and what it is not.

What is Self Assessment Software?

Self Assessment Software is dedicated UK tax-return software for accountants and individuals. It covers SA100 and the main supplementary pages (SA101–SA110), the partnership SA800 pack, a combined tax calculation, an SA302-style estimate, a detailed schedule and an HMRC filing desk. It is not bookkeeping, corporation tax, payroll or VAT software.

Who is Self Assessment Software for?

Accountants and tax practices that need a Self Assessment desk, and individuals who file their own SA100 (sole traders, landlords, employment and investment filers, and partners). It is software only — it does not include a human accountant.

Is this bookkeeping software?

No. There are no invoices, bank feeds or VAT returns. Keep FreeAgent, Xero or QuickBooks for the ledger. This product is the year-end Self Assessment return.

Is this a full practice suite like Capium or IRIS?

No. It is Self Assessment only. There is no corporation tax, payroll, Companies House or practice management suite. Buy those elsewhere if you need them, and keep SA here.

Does it support Making Tax Digital for Income Tax?

Year-end Self Assessment is in the product now. MTD quarterly updates are planned as a later add-on, the same way TaxCalc sells MTD Quarterly Filer separately. Do not buy today if you only need quarterly ITSA submissions.

Does MTD replace the SA100?

No. Making Tax Digital for Income Tax adds quarterly digital updates for people in scope. The annual SA100 (and related pages) still closes the year.

Do you do corporation tax or CT600?

No. Corporation tax, iXBRL accounts and Companies House filings are out of scope. This desk is individual and partnership Self Assessment only.

Do you include payroll or VAT returns?

No. Payroll and VAT belong to other products. Mixing them into the SA desk would inflate the price and dilute the year-end return.

Is it cheaper than Capium or TaxCalc for Self Assessment?

For dedicated Self Assessment without a suite, yes on typical bands. Capium’s SA module usually needs a full practice suite. TaxCalc Individual 12 is about £187 per year for 12 clients. We sell pay-per-filing returns and accountant credits with unlimited practice logins. We do not replace a full practice suite.

FAQ

Pricing & buying

Prepare free, pay when you file, VAT and amendments.

How much does it cost?

List prices exclude VAT. Individuals pay per tax year: Employment & investment £39, Self-employed & property £49, Partnership £69. Accountants buy filing credits (10 for £179, 25 for £349, 50 for £599, 100 for £999). Prepare free — you pay when you file. No monthly subscription on the public plans.

What does prepare free mean?

You can create an account, open a tax year and complete the SA100 and any pages that apply with no card and no charge. You pay only when that tax year is ready to submit to HMRC (or when a practice uses a filing credit for that client year).

When do I pay?

When you file that tax year. Drafting never uses an individual fee or a practice credit. Payment is tied to filing, not to starting the return.

Are prices including VAT?

List prices on the site exclude VAT unless we say otherwise. VAT is added at checkout or on the invoice where applicable.

Which individual plan do I need?

Employment & investment (£39) if income is mainly PAYE, savings or dividends. Self-employed & property (£49) if you trade or let UK property — including mixed income. Partnership (£69) for the SA104 / SA800 path.

Is there a monthly subscription?

No monthly Sole or Practice taxpayer-cap subscription on the public plans. Individuals pay per tax year when they file. Practices buy filing credit packs.

Are amendments included?

Yes. When you have paid for that tax year (or used a credit for that client year), amendments for the same return year are included. Drafting never uses a credit — only filing does.

Can I preview the tax calculation before I pay?

Yes. Complete the return pages and run the combined calculation and SA302-style estimate while drafting. Paying is only required when you file that year.

What if I start a return and never file?

You are not charged for unfinished drafts. A fee or credit is only used when that tax year is filed.

FAQ

Accountants & practices

Filing credits, unlimited logins and volume packs.

How are accountants charged?

On filing credits: one credit equals one client tax year when you file. Unlimited staff logins. Credits do not charge you for drafting returns — only for filing.

What does one filing credit cover?

One credit = one taxpayer × one tax year at filing. Unlimited drafting for that client year beforehand. Amendments for the same client year are included after the credit is used.

How many staff can log in?

Unlimited practice logins on the public credit packs. Staff seats do not consume credits — only filing a client tax year does.

What credit packs can I buy?

List prices exclude VAT: 10 for £179 (£17.90 each), 25 for £349 (£13.96 each — most chosen), 50 for £599 (£11.98 each), 100 for £999 (£9.99 each). Credits are valid for 12 months from purchase.

Do unused credits expire?

Credits are valid for 12 months from purchase. Use them for client tax years you file in that window.

Can a practice file more than 100 returns?

Yes. Buy another pack, or contact us for volume credits above 100. There is no monthly taxpayer-cap subscription on the public plans — only pay-when-you-file credits.

Can I draft every client before buying credits?

Yes. Prepare client returns free. Apply a credit only when a client tax year is ready to file.

FAQ

Individuals & sole traders

Your own return, landlords and which plan to pick.

Can a sole trader use it?

Yes. Individuals file their own return only and cannot add other people’s clients. It is software only: it does not include an accountant (unlike Crunch) and it is not a bookkeeping app (unlike FreeAgent or QuickBooks).

Can I file for other people as an individual?

No. An individual organisation is for your own return. If you file for clients, register as a practice and buy filing credits.

I am a landlord — which plan?

Usually Self-employed & property (£49 ex VAT) per tax year when you file. That path covers UK property (SA105) and mixed income when it applies.

I only have employment income — which plan?

Employment & investment (£39 ex VAT) if your Self Assessment is mainly PAYE, savings or dividends. Choose Self-employed & property if you also trade or let property.

Do I still need FreeAgent or Xero?

If you need invoices and bank feeds during the year, yes — keep a bookkeeping app for that. Use Self Assessment Software for the year-end SA100 depth, calculation and filing.

Is tax advice included?

No. This is software, not a tax adviser. You remain responsible for the figures you file with HMRC.

FAQ

SA forms & the desk

SA100–SA110, SA800, calculation, SA302-style reports and status.

What is an SA100?

The SA100 is HMRC’s main Self Assessment tax return for individuals. After each tax year (6 April to 5 April) you report income, reliefs and tax already paid. Supplementary pages attach when they apply.

Which supplementary pages are included?

The desk covers the main individual pages as they apply — including SA101, SA102 (employment), SA103 (self-employment), SA104 (partnership), SA105 (UK property), SA106–SA110 and related variants, plus the partnership SA800 pack. See Features for the full inventory.

What is the partnership SA800?

SA800 is the partnership’s own return (with related partnership pages). Partners often also need an individual SA100 with SA104. The product covers the partnership path and the individual’s share. See the What is an SA800? guide for nominated partner, statement and deadline rules.

How does the year hub work?

Each taxpayer tax year has a workspace: personal details, what applies, the pages you need, the main SA100, calculation and reports, then the filing desk. HMRC box numbers sit on the fields.

What filing statuses do you use?

Draft → in review → approved → submitted (or queued for HMRC send). A snapshot is frozen when you submit so you keep a record of what was filed.

What is an SA302?

An SA302 is HMRC’s tax calculation summary. Mortgage lenders often ask for it as proof of income. We produce an SA302-style estimate and a detailed schedule from your return. It is not an official HMRC SA302 until HMRC issues one after filing.

Will a mortgage lender accept your SA302-style report?

Some lenders accept a clear software calculation and schedule; many prefer HMRC’s own SA302 once the return is processed. Ask your broker what they need. Never present an estimate as an official HMRC document.

Can I print or save a PDF of the calculation?

Yes. Open reports for that tax year and use the browser print or save-as-PDF flow for the SA302-style estimate and detailed schedule.

Do you cover trust returns (SA900)?

No. Trust SA900 is out of scope. The desk is individual SA100–SA110 and partnership SA800.

Where can I see every form on the desk?

On the Features page. It lists SA100 and supplementary pages, the SA800 pack, calculation, reports and the filing desk.

FAQ

Deadlines, filing & account

31 January, HMRC submit, sign-up and support.

What is the Self Assessment deadline?

Online Self Assessment is due by 31 January after the end of the tax year (6 April to 5 April). Paper returns are due by 31 October. The product is built around the online SA100 workflow.

What is the penalty for late filing?

HMRC usually charges £100 for missing the online deadline, even if you have no tax to pay. Further penalties can apply if the return stays outstanding. Always check GOV.UK for the current rules.

Should I file if I cannot pay the tax yet?

Yes — file on time to stop filing penalties growing. You can still arrange payment with HMRC separately. Filing and paying are related but not the same job.

How do I file online with this product?

Create a free account, open the tax year, complete the SA100 and any pages that apply, preview the calculation, then pay for that year (or apply a credit) and submit from the filing desk. See the How to file guide for steps.

Do you send the return to HMRC?

The filing desk is built for online HMRC submission. Live send depends on HMRC connection being in place for your workspace. The workflow — draft, approve, submit — is already in the product.

How do I create an account?

Use Get started on the website. That opens one organisation (practice or individual) and one login. No card is taken until you file. Large practices can contact us for volume credits.

Is my data isolated from other organisations?

Yes. Each organisation only sees its own workspace. Sensitive identifiers such as NINO and UTR are encrypted at rest. See the Security page for more detail.

How do I contact support?

Use the contact form or email info@selfassessmentsoftware.co.uk. We aim to reply within one business day (Monday–Friday, UK time).

Where can I learn more before I buy?

Read Features, How to file, Pricing, the SA100 guide, and Compare vs TaxCalc or Capium. Or start free and explore the desk with no card.
